Music festival season is finally here! Whether you're headed to your first one or the 101st, it's always exciting. Dancing to live music, surrounded by fellow music lovers, creating memories that will last a lifetime; it's an amazing experience. But before you can dive into the festival energy, packing is key. Packing the right gear can enhance your experience and help you fully enjoy the event. Below is the ultimate music festival packing list to ensure you’re ready to rock!

Essentials to Bring

When packing for a music festival, start with the essentials. Here are the must-haves to ensure you’re ready for the festivities:

  • Festival Ticket: This is your golden ticket to enter. Without it, you’re stuck outside looking in! Some tickets are wristbands and some are digital, so make sure you have whatever you need to get in.

  • ID: A valid identification is a must, especially if you want to enjoy some adult beverages inside the festival gates.

  • Cards and Cash: A lot of venues have gone completely cashless, so it's important to research your festival to know their policy. Either way, I recommend taking a credit card with enough available credit to pay for the pricey food and drinks (plus t-shirts!) at the event. You can use a debit card, but using a credit card is safer if someone steals or hacks it, because credit card companies generally offer better fraud protection than debit cards. If you want to keep cash on hand for emergencies and other events during your trip, be sure to take all the precautions at the ATM and while you're paying.

  • Phone: Of course you're going to be taking pictures of the bands, your friends, and selfies! But you'll also need it to keep in touch with friends (for safety!) and send for a rideshare when it's time to leave.

  • Portable Charger: Your phone won't do you any good if the battery dies. In a study, 73% of festival-goers reported that a dead phone battery ruined their experience. Keep it charged so you can stay connected!

  • Refillable water bottle: Although you won't be allowed to bring outside beverages, most venues have bottle filling stations available now. Staying hydrated is essential, and using your own bottle is a significant money-saver.

Clothing Considerations

Outdoor festivals are open to wild weather events, so it's important to be prepared. Remember, the show will usually go on, no matter what the weather does. Be sure to pack the following necessities:

  • Comfortable Clothing: Choose stylish, breathable clothes. Think about lightweight fabrics, like cotton or linen, that keep you cool while allowing for easy movement.

  • Layer Up: Mornings and evenings can be chilly. Pack a light jacket or hoodie to stay warm during late-night acts.

  • Footwear: Approximately 60% of festival attendees said they've dealt with muddy grounds, so pack some type of waterproof shoes. Being prepared can save the entire trip. Almost every time I've been to Jazz Fest in New Orleans, rain boots have been a must for wading through standing water from frequent thunderstorms. They're basically a fashion staple there!

  • Accessories: Head scarves are stylish, versatile and functional; they can protect you from the sun, dust, and even light rain. Plus they add flair to your festival outfit! Other important accessories include sunglasses and hats for even more sun protection and style.

Camping Gear (If Applicable)

If you're attending a multi-day festival and camping out, you'll need to pack these items:

  • Tent: A lightweight and weather-resistant tent is crucial. Try to choose one that can withstand rain, as up to 30% of festival-goers have faced unexpected downpours.

  • Sleeping Bag and Pad: Comfort is key for a good night’s sleep, especially after a long day of dancing.

  • Foldable Chairs: Perfect for leisurely lounging when you're not dancing or at shows.

  • Cooler and Food: Having snacks on hand can save you money and keep your energy up. Many festivals allow limited food items, so check their guidelines!

Toiletries and Hygiene

Staying clean and hygienic at a festival is vital. Here’s what to include in your toiletries kit:

  • Wet Wipes: Ideal for a quick freshen-up when showers are scarce. They provide a clean feeling, especially on hot days.

  • Hand Sanitizer: A hygiene must-have to fend off germs, especially after using public facilities.

  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste: Of course oral hygiene is always important. Small, travel-sized versions are easy to pack and use, even when camping.

  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from sunburn. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

  • Travel-Size Tissue Packs: These are a lifesaver if the porta-potty is out of toilet paper!

Fun Extras

To enhance your festival experience, consider these fun additions:

  • Light-Up Items: Glow sticks or LED accessories can add a fun element to your night adventures.

  • Portable Hammock: Perfect for relaxing between acts. They’re lightweight and easy to set up.

  • Weather Gear: Rain can pop up unexpectedly, so bring a poncho or raincoat for those surprise showers.

  • Blanket or Towel: Ideal for resting or picnicking while you catch your breath or wait for the next performance.

Music Festival Etiquette and Safety

Being mindful of your surroundings is important. Keep these tips in mind to ensure a safe experience and a respectful atmosphere:

  • Stay Hydrated: Heat can take its toll. Aim for at least half a gallon of water each day to stay refreshed and energized.

  • Be Polite: Respect fellow festival-goers. Everyone is there to enjoy themselves, just like you.

  • Know Your Limits: If you are consuming alcohol, be aware of how much you are drinking. Enjoy responsibly to stay safe.

  • Stick with Friends: Establish a meeting place in case anyone gets separated. Mobile networks often struggle in crowded venues.

Get Ready for an Unforgettable Experience

Attending a music festival should be thrilling, not stressful. By following this comprehensive packing guide, you’ll be well-prepared for whatever comes your way. Each item is important to ensure a fantastic time. So start planning and get ready to enjoy music festival season!
